Problem: Validating a promising new business idea

Solution: Quick, low-cost, semi-custom prototype

Result: Fully functional prototype in 6 weeks

An experienced entrepreneur faced an all-too-common problem. He had a promising new business idea, but did not want to waste 9-12 months building the technical solution only to discover it was not a viable idea.

Not to mention the $50K to $100K to build it.

The client’s idea was a complex commercial real estate website designed to compete with the million-dollar industry leader. The prototype could not practically be built from scratch in a short timeframe.

Our solution was to leverage an existing system and customize it to meet the client’s needs. By starting with a 70% solution the Moventis team could focus on the unique aspects of the client’s idea and deliver a prototype quickly and at a much-reduced cost.

How Did We Do with the Prototype?

Moventis released the prototype to the public in 6 weeks instead of 9-12 months. The client was able to begin gathering feedback from real customers immediately, who were using a fully-functional product rather than a limited beta.

Plus, we delivered the project at less than 10% of the cost of building from scratch.

Problem: Dull web site for a colorful global brand Solution: Web site […]

Problem: Dull web site for a colorful global brand

Solution: Web site refresh

Result: Online presence now supports the brand

Mention the Caribbean and immediately one thinks of turquoise waters, spicy foods, and dance-able beats. Exactly the brand image that a Caribbean food products company would want to showcase. Unfortunately for our client, their existing web site was more suburban blah than tropical paradise.

Over the years this family food production and distribution business had been diligent in updating their product labeling to exploit the Caribbean roots of their business. The web site had not been treated as well.

The challenge for the Moventis team was that the client site was built on obsolete technology and the client did not want to replace it. Simple changes like adding a page background required custom code to be able to function somewhat like the current internet. Moreover, the client required that the site must be compatible with a 12 year old version of Internet Explorer.

Given those constraints, we partnered with Lauderdale Graphics to create custom graphics and product images, and we were able to deliver a colorful, informative site that looks and feel very much like a modern site. The refreshed web site truly captures the essence of the company, it’s owners, and their history.

How Did We Do with the Web Site Refresh?

Formal metrics were not captured as part of this client project. The intention was to improve the brand image online and bring it to par with their offline marketing, as opposed to any specific sales or customer satisfaction numbers. Anecdotally, we did see a rise in page visits to the recipe pages which feature the client’s products.

Problem: Improve bottle service sales for restaurant/lounge Solution: Tablet app Result: Average […]

Problem: Improve bottle service sales for restaurant/lounge

Solution: Tablet app

Result: Average profit per sale up 18%; customer satisfaction up by 53%+

Restaurants and clubs understand the profit potential of bottle service. Our client wanted to take his program to the next level by not only improving profit and sales, but also by radically improving the experience for his customers.

The Moventis team built a tablet app as a digital bottle service menu to replace the old paper menus. Management now had the ability to change bottle specials on the fly, leveraging any supplier incentives or pushing stagnant inventory. Customers had a hip, modern tool that was also easy to read in the darkest of rooms. And the increased selection of specials and themed discounts helped push overall bottle sales upward.

An added plus was that the bottle service staff no longer had to scream over the loud music to explain minimum bottle rules. No more screaming any specials that were not listed on the old paper menus. More upscale experience for both the customers and the staff.

How Did We Do with Bottle Service?

The average profit per sale climbed 18%, primarily due to better utilization of supplier incentives. The rise in customer satisfaction was measured through two means. First was the selective use of post-purchase customer surveys. Second was the rise in social mentions for the establishment and especially for the bottle service. There was also a rise in bottle service tips, though was considered anecdotal and was not reflected in the customer satisfaction scores.

Problem: Hyper busy $7MM restaurant overwhelmed with back office reconciliation Solution: Custom […]

Problem: Hyper busy $7MM restaurant overwhelmed with back office reconciliation

Solution: Custom application

Result: Reconciliation effort reduced by 78%, over $54K annual savings

A well-known local restaurant had an enviable problem. Abundant business was causing headaches and unnecessary cost to reconcile every day. Reconciling credit card deposits against sales, tracking outstanding gift cards, creating bookkeeping reports, planning for upcoming events, etc., were all taking far too much time (read: salary cost) to complete.

The Moventis team built a custom application to automate most of the reconciliation. The result was far less busy work for the back office staff, and more consistent reconciliation. Plus, much more time available for high-value work like selling catering or events.

How Did We Do with the Custom Application?

Overall effort spent in employee hours toward the reconciliation was reduced by 78%. Most of that reduction was due to automating manual and repetitive tasks. A smaller amount was attributed to simplifying and assisting with the data gathering. Beyond the $54K annual savings, there was additional income generated by office staff on increased event sales and catering. Unfortunately the client did not quantify the benefits, but ongoing they were substantial.
